Iwan lahir di Jakarta, 5 September 1963, menyelesaikan pendidikan tinggi Diploma di ATGI Jakarta, Sarjana di DKV IKJ, Magister di KWA UI, dan Doktoral di Sejarah UI. Sejak 1986, ia menjadi perancang grafis dan ilustrator, memenangi beberapa kompetisi desain dan ilustrasi nasional. Di IKJ, Iwan mengajar di DKV dan Pascasarjana, pernah bekerja sebagai ketua Jurusan Desain, wakil rektor, direktur Pascasarjana, dan sekarang ketua LPPM Seni Rupa dan Pusat Kajian Naratif Visual. Ia aktif di komunitas ilustrasi dan komik, pem-red di jurnal Urban, jurnal Seni Rupa Warna dan dewan redaksi Internasional IJOCA (International Journal of Comic Art).

1992 – Best Illustration for the IKAPI children book competition, titled “Perang Yang Disesali”
